English

Speaking and Listening

Freya is a very confident speaker who is always ready to answer, join in with discussions and share her opinions. Freya enjoys working as part of a team and is very good at turn taking and listening. She is able to organise a group and is showing that she can be a good team leader. Freya has enjoyed being part of our drama activities this year and also being part of debates in Philosophy.

Reading

Freya has really developed her reading ability this year. She is able to empathise with characters in a story and justify her view with evidence from the book. Freya can recognise a variety of genres and can vary reading style to match the text type. Freya has also enjoyed taking part in a peer book group where she can share opinions and ideas about a book.

Writing (including handwriting)

Freya has developed her ability to write in a range of styles and her adventure story has been especially good, using adjectives, similes, personification and onomatopoeia. She can sometimes take a little too long on a writing task and this can restrict her ability to achieve her potential. Freya can find it difficult to spell some common words and would benefit from extra practice of her weekly spellings and target words. Her cursive handwriting is very neat and a pleasure to read.

Targets for improvement

  • To practise spellings each week
  • To use all the time given effectively
Mathematics

Using and Applying

Freya can confidently solve one and two step problems, including those in context. She can also give explanations of the methods she used to work the answer out. Freya can spot patterns and relationships between numbers and shapes to help when problem solving and can also investigate a statement and test it with examples.

Number

Freya can read and write numbers over 1000 and can partition these numbers to help with her calculations. She can show her working out using clear written methods and use her knowledge of inverse to check calculations. Freya is confident in dividing with remainders, although can find rounding up or down, depending on the context, difficult.

Shape, space and measures

Freya can use standard metric units and can use a decimal place to record measurements. She can accurately read a numbered or partially-numbered scale when measuring length, weight and capacity, although can sometimes forget to use the unit of measure when doing written work.

Handling Data

Freya can collect and organise data into a range of charts and graphs and also accurately analyse and interpret data. She has also used ICT to create a clear chart or graph.

Targets for improvement

  • To use the unit of measure when appropriate
  • To practise dividing with remainders in context and rounding the answer up or down

Science

Scientific Enquiry

Freya can ask questions to follow a line of enquiry. She can record results using observations and measurements, make a sensible and thoughtful prediction, compare it with the results and draw a conclusion.

Areas covered

This year we have covered Science within our topic learning. We have learnt about: teeth and eating, magnets and springs, materials and their properties, light and shadow, rocks and soils, and how plants grow. Freya has really enjoyed learning about rocks and soils within our Land of Lava topic. She was able to label and group the rocks as well as test how hard they were and their permeability.

Themed Work

This year our topics have included the Olympics, Explorers, Tribal Lands, Inventors, Land of Lava and The Viking Way. During our Land of Lava topic Freya showed a creative flare when designing and making a print for the front cover of her adventure story. She enjoyed designing and making a torch in our Olympics topic which included an electrical circuit with a switch to turn a bulb on and off. She liked learning when and where the Vikings invaded and spent time using a map to plot the routes they took. She can also identify Viking towns and villages as places ending with ‘by’ or ‘thorpe’. She has learnt to create a graph using Excel and can use the internet for research. Freya has really enjoyed learning through out topics this year especially when we were able to go on school trips. She enjoyed the trip to the Collection for our Viking workshop in which she was able to visit the museum, make Viking jewellery and use the archaeology dig room.

Other Subjects

Music

Freya is confident in using a range of musical instruments. During our Tribal Lands topic she really enjoyed the Ghanaian drumming workshop and learnt a range of techniques which she continued to use throughout the year. Freya worked with a group to compose a new piece of music inspired by Morse Code to link with our Inventors topic. Freya created a great piece of music linking the sounds together well.

Religious Education

This year during RE sessions we have looked at the beliefs and values of different religions including Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism. Freya has listened with interest to stories about the beliefs of the faiths and has enjoyed finding out about different cultures. She can speak confidently about her thoughts, beliefs and opinions and compare them with other people’s.

Physical Education

Freya is a keen sportswoman and this can be seen in the skills she has. She is able to control a ball when moving and accurately pass and receive. She also enjoys creating a sequence of movements using a range of different levels, speeds and pathways. Freya is a good team player and can give advice to others to help improve their performance.

Foreign Languages

Freya has a good pronunciation when speaking French, is confident in counting to 10 and greeting people. She can identify colour names in French and knows the days of the week. During our French breakfast Freya enjoyed asking for food and drink in French. We also learnt some simple words in Chinese during our Olympics topic.

General Comments

Freya settled well in Year 3 and has made good progress throughout the year. She is a polite young lady who is confident in answering questions and sharing her opinion. Her positive attitude towards learning means that she has a good understanding of the subjects we cover. Freya has shown a great interest in our topic learning and has done extra work at home as well as bringing in books to share with the rest of the class.

Freya works well in a group and can take the role of a team leader. She can clearly share her opinion and listen carefully to others. Freya has also worked well with her learning partners during our topic work and has built up a good working relationship with them. Freya has enjoyed taking part in after school activities and really enjoyed Girls’ Basketball, as well as the Sewing Club.

I wish Freya luck in Year 4 and I am sure that she will do well with her confident attitude.
